Cecilia Barrett and Allan Morgan

Dancer Cecilia Barrett and conductor Allan Morgan talk about their time at Rambert during the 1960s.

Cecilia was born in Brazil and began her dancing career in a small company there. When she came to the UK, she danced a season with Walter Gore’s London Ballet and then successfully auditioned for Rambert in 1964.

Allan was born in Shropshire, and whilst studying at the Royal College of Music decided he would like to conduct. At the age of twenty-two Allan became 2nd conductor at London Festival Ballet. Later he joined Rambert also as 2nd conductor and pianist.

Cecilia and Allan met each other at Rambert in December 1964 and married a year later. In this interview, Cecilia and Allan recall life in their different roles at Rambert and talk about touring, rehearsals and performances. Both remember Marie Rambert and describe how she was able to develop artistry in the dancers and had a gift for spotting talent. Cecilia and Allan tell us about the changes at Rambert in 1966 and how the decision to change direction affected them.
