About Rambert

Our history

In 1926, Rambert gave its first performances of new, original choreography, establishing a company built on creativity and experimentation. One hundred years later, in 2026, we mark a historic milestone as the first dance company in Britain to celebrate a centenary of performance. The journey began in 1914, when Marie Rambert arrived in London after fleeing the First World War. Her commitment to nurturing artists and new ideas continues to shape Rambert today.

In London she supported herself by giving tuition in dance and eurhythmics. At the same time she continued with her own ballet studies, as well as performing as a soloist. Two years later she opened a school of dancing in Bedford Gardens, Kensington.
