Current Motions – Future Movement Current Motions recently took place on 20th May, taking over Rambert headquarters with an event for young people by young people. The event celebrated new talent with genre bending performances by some of London’s most exciting youth companies. This event was crafted by Rambert’s youth skills development project, Future Movement – an ongoing project in collaboration with Theatre Peckham, bringing together a group of 16 to 19-year-olds to learn new skills and working together with professionals from both organisations in weekly sessions. These brilliant and daring young people have worked with a host of industry professionals to create the event which was as an outstanding success. With cutting-edge speakers and guest artists, the evening brought a showcase of Theatre Peckham’s Spoken Word artists and Camden Youth Theatre – with the extraordinary performances bringing the audience to their feet in support – as well as passionate dance from London based youth dance company Artistry Youth Dance. Participants from Future Movement Participants from Future Movement expressed that they wanted to create the event to “breakdown barriers and meet and talk with people in artistic industries” and to “give young people a voice and a platform to share their work” – inviting a host of guest artists to take part in Q&A’s and conversations about their journey’s in the industry – speakers included: Bani Mendy – DOP & film maker Liam Francis – Dance artist & choreographer Jahvel Hall – Actor & writer Koko Brown – Multidisciplinary artist and producer Kamara Gray – CEO of Artistry Youth Dance. About the evening The evening lasted from 7:15pm until 9:20pm – with a DJ setting the mood and giving participants the opportunity to network and soak in the atmosphere, and plenty of opportunities to engage with the space with a doodle board and selfie mirror. They also had the opportunity to map their journey to the building to get an idea of how and where each person had travelled to the venue. The Future Movement Paricipants who created this evening are: Augustine Shaw, Estelle Sannoh, Ciara Shannon Donegal-Webb, Hilary Senou, Rhys Lee Howarth, Sarah Kaba, Elizabeth Adeleke and Ben King.
