Work note: First performed on 17 April 1973 by Ballet Rambert at the Young Vic, London, in the 'works in progress' section of the 'Dance for New Dimensions' programme of dances designed for thrust (open) stages. It was subsequently taken into the main repertoire. Inspired by the painting 'The Family of the Saltimbanques' (1905) by Pablo Picasso.
