Work note: Dedication: 'This ballet is dedicated to Marie Rambert on the anniversary of the twenty-fifth year of her company'. Based on some of the characters from the Prologue of 'The Canterbury Tales' by Geoffrey Chaucer. The ballet was created for the Canterbury Festival, but previewed under the title 'Surprise Ballet' on 19 July 1951 at the Royal Hall, Harrogate.
Production note: Edward Burra is credited as 'decor and costumes'.
