Keith Hodiak (1950–2025)

Rambert is deeply saddened to learn of the death of former dancer Keith Hodiak (1950–2025), a pioneering performer whose presence helped reshape the landscape of British dance.

Keith joined the company in 1972, becoming the first Black dancer to perform with a UK national dance company, a landmark moment that helped open doors for future generations.

Born in Guyana and raised in London, he trained at Arts Educational Schools before joining Rambert during a pivotal period under the artistic direction of Norman Morrice. Over three years he performed widely in the UK and internationally in works including Isolde, Spindrift and The Parades Gone By. Keith is remembered by colleagues at Rambert for his musicality, openness and strong stage presence.

After leaving the company in 1975, Keith enjoyed a varied performing career before devoting much of his life to teaching. A respected dance instructor and dedicated teacher of Sivananda yoga and Tai Chi, he was a generous mentor who supported many young dancers and helped several Black students secure scholarships to train at the Rambert School, continuing the barrier breaking work that had defined his own journey.

Keith is remembered with great affection as a pioneer, an inspiring teacher and a valued part of Rambert’s history. His legacy lives on in the artists and students whose paths he helped to shape.
