How to Keep Moving in the Heat (Without Melting Into the Sofa)

There’s a special kind of guilt that creeps in during a heatwave… the sofa is cool, the curtains are drawn, and your trainers are gathering dust by the door. But the reality is you don’t have to choose between “sweltering workout” and “no movement at all.” Summer and the hot weather just asks you to move a little differently.

At Rambert Plus, we believe movement should meet you where you are. So instead of skipping class altogether, we’ve pulled together our best dance tips for moving smart in the heat, plus a few classes from our library that are low intensity, shorter, but just as satisfying.

Why Your Usual Routine Needs a Summer Edit

Heat changes how your body works. Your heart has to work harder to keep cool, you lose fluids faster, and your usual pace can start to feel like a much bigger effort than normal. None of that means you should stop moving, it just means it’s worth adjusting how and when you do it.

A gentler class, done consistently, will always beat a brutal session you talk yourself out of because it’s simply too hot to face.

5 Dance Tips to Move Smarter This Summer

  1. Shrink the session, not the habit
On sticky days, swap your usual 45-minute class for something shorter. A focused 15–20 minute session still gets your body moving, your mind clear, and your streak intact.
  2. Dial the intensity down, not out
Low intensity doesn’t mean low value. Slower, controlled movement, like gentle yoga, guided meditation, or easy dance moves in a social dance class, keeps you mobile and mindful while keeping your heart rate (and your body temperature) in check.
  3. Time it right
Early mornings and post-sunset evenings are naturally cooler. If you can, save your movement for the edges of the day, when the air, and your living room, hasn’t fully heated up yet.
  4. Hydrate before you feel thirsty
By the time you’re thirsty, you’re already a step behind. Sip water before, during, and after any class, and keep a glass within reach the whole way through.
  5. Listen to what your body’s telling you
Lightheaded, overheated, or just not feeling it? That’s your cue to pause, not push through. Summer movement should feel restorative, not like a battle against the temperature.
