What happens in the Costume department?

We are given the costume designs from the designer and a budget from the producers. Designs can either be illustrations or a mood board of images. We then must purchase the fabric or shop for the clothes, then we take dancers measurements and start making the costume.

Sometimes the fabrics might need to be dyed a different colour, and sometimes a specific design pattern will need to be printed or embroidered onto the fabric. Then we draft a pattern for thecostume, cut and make the costume ready for first fittings.

We fit the costume to the dancer’s unique body measurements, complete alterations and then usuallydo another 1 or 2 fittings before the garment is completed. All the accessories; shoes, jewellery, hats,gloves, tights, socks, underwear, wigs/hair and make up need to be checked in the fitting with thecostume, so we need to have these at the time of
